Transylvania travel guide
Nov 4, 2026 · @Bogdan Puiu
Transylvania sits in the heart of Romania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains, and it is the region most visitors come for. Medieval Saxon towns, hilltop castles, fortified village churches and mountain roads all lie within a few hours of each other. Plan five to seven days to see the main towns, or more if you want to explore the villages and the mountains.
Best time to visit
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) usually bring mild weather and fewer crowds. July and August are warm and busy, especially around Brașov and Bran. Winter suits Christmas markets in Sibiu and Brașov, and skiing around Poiana Brașov. Mountain passes such as the Transfăgărășan close in winter, so check opening dates before you plan a drive.
Getting there and around
Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu have international airports, and many visitors also arrive via Bucharest and continue by train or car. Brașov is roughly two and a half to three hours from Bucharest by train. Trains connect the main towns, but they are slow, and buses fill the gaps.
A rental car gives you the most freedom, especially for villages and mountain scenery. Roads can be narrow and slow, so allow extra time. Driving on Romanian national roads requires a valid road vignette (rovinieta), which you can buy online.
Top places to visit
- Brașov: a colourful old town around Council Square, the Gothic Black Church, and the Tâmpa mountain cable car. It is also the best base for Bran Castle and the Carpathian foothills.
- Sibiu: one of the most walkable and polished towns in Romania, with interlinked squares, the Bridge of Lies and rooftops with “eyes” that peer over the old town.
- Sighișoara: a UNESCO-listed hilltop citadel with a clock tower and cobbled lanes. It is widely linked to Vlad the Impaler’s birthplace.
- Cluj-Napoca: a lively university city with cafés and nightlife, and an easy day trip to the Turda Salt Mine.
- Saxon villages and fortified churches: Viscri and Biertan are the best known, and their churches are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Come for the slow pace and the village life.
- Bran Castle: the castle most associated with the Dracula legend. It is busy, so go early. (add link to your Bran Castle post when published)
- Alba Iulia: a large star-shaped citadel that is easy to see in half a day.
Suggested itineraries
- Transylvania in five days: Brașov, Sighișoara, Sibiu. (add link when published)
- Weekend in Brașov, with day trips to Bran and Râșnov. (add link when published)
- A slower route through the Saxon villages by car. (add link when published)
Where to stay
Stay in Brașov or Sibiu for the best choice of hotels and restaurants, and book a guesthouse in a village for a quieter night. Sighișoara works well as an overnight stop. Book ahead in July, August and around Christmas.
Practical tips
- Romania uses the leu (RON). Cards work well in towns, but carry some cash for villages and small guesthouses.
- Try local dishes such as sarmale (cabbage rolls), mămăligă (polenta) and papanași (a fried-dough dessert).
- Bears live in the Carpathians. Follow local advice if you hike, and never feed wildlife.
- Allow more driving time than maps suggest, particularly on mountain roads and in summer.
